Clark Atlanta University, or CAU for short, is a private, historically black university in Atlanta, which is the capital and the most populated city in the US state of Georgia, as well as the 33rd largest city in USA, having a population estimated at a number of more than 540 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. Atlanta's metropolitan area, known as the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, GA MSA is the 9th largest one in the country, having more than 5 million people living, within its limits, the Atlanta Combined Statistical Area, having a population of nearly 6 million people, fact which makes it the most populous metropolis in the American Southeast.
CAU was established in July, 1988, and it is a member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). It is a 4-year university which offers undergraduate, graduate, specialist and doctoral professional degrees as well as certificate programs, in various fields of study, through 4 colleges: Business Administration, Arts and Sciences, Education and Social Work. According to The Washington Monthly, Clark Atlanta University is one of the of ''Best Colleges and Universities'', and 24th, out of 34 historically black colleges and universities, as stated by the US News & World Report.
CAU's athletic teams are known as the Black Panthers, who compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division II, in all the traditional college sports for men and women. Their distinctive colors are red, black and gray.
The list of notable CAU alumni contains resonant names, such as: Sir Edward Miles III - Philanthropist and Designed DTG, Inc facility, Son of Royal Court, Henry C. ''Hank'' Johnson - U.S. Congressman, Georgia 4th District, Otis Johnson - Mayor of Savannah, Georgia, Phuthuma Nhleko - CEO of the MTN Group, Richard R. Wright - first African American Paymaster in the U.S. Army and first President of Savannah State University, and Louis Tompkins Wright - first African American surgeon to head the Department of Surgery at Harlem Hospital in New York City, New York, among others.
